Feedback: The Key To Building Strong Teams

The ability to provide skillful feedback, building on strengths and correcting weaknesses, is among the most important characteristics of good leadership. Why? Because all high performance teams are built one performance, one conversation at a time. But the reality is, most leaders do not have have the skills or confidence to hold these brief but powerful conversations well. Most tend to avoid these situations altogether.

I remember well recognizing the importance of feedback many years ago as a junior manager. I was determined to develop the best feedback skills I could. Years later, as the president at both the Calgary Herald and the St. Catharines Standard, I worked hard at passing on what I had learned about effective feedback to the men and women who served on my leadership teams. I knew that our performance would always be a reflection of the leadership we gave our team members.
